Stories Worth Telling
At the end of the year, as we reflect on all that God has done, it's a blessing to be able to see a chapter of a story resolved with grace and favor. Our friends at The Joseph Project helped one of our phenomenal authors, Khalila Riga, with some outstanding legal issues over the last two years. Though our participation in this story was small, we were included in the recap video and are honored to be a part of the testimony God is writing for Khalila and The Joseph Project.
It's easy to feel as though our story isn't worth telling, that our time isn't amounting to what it ought. BUT God says otherwise. Here are some common struggles and then reflections/thoughts that have come to mind during this season of advent regarding our role in His story:
Feeling like your role is small/insignificant
It’s really a common thing, to look around and wonder where you fit into the “big picture”. The beginning of the Gospels, however, is in direct competition with our thoughts of insignificance. Generation after generation, mother and father after mother and father, obedient person after obedient person all make up the lineage of Christ. This part of the Christmas story, one we’re sometimes quick to skip over, tells us all something crucial to our understanding of ourselves and our relationship with our Creator: every role in the story is known and remembered by God. Matthew 1.
Feeling the mundane
Even if the holidays provide a brief reprieve, there are moments when life feels like a checklist. Like you’re bound up in compliance and monotony, that you are very much “on earth”. Then we read about the birth of the Savior - the fulfillment of a prophecy, the arrival of a king in Bethlehem. And realize his arrival there was orchestrated by God, who graciously weaves our mundane, earthly tasks - like a census - into His big picture plans. Luke 2 & Matthew 2.
Making do with what you have instead of what you want
To “want” is not an error of human nature, but it is a reflection our fallen state. We know there's "more", and we strive for it. Made in the likeness of our Creator, humanity will build or make do with what we have access to as we seek out "more". In the holidays this may be more felt than at other times of the year. It’s hard to miss the beautiful, humble arrival of Jesus in a manger, not in a home as his parents would’ve chosen or a palace as He deserved. This imagery serves as a reflection of the Lord saying that obedience will always be enough, that He will work out the story as He chooses. Luke 2:7
The Lord took circumstances all too familiar to our daily lives and told the beautiful story we have passed on for thousands of years. He writes well, and thinks of you as He does. Praying that we would be willing to submit our timelines & agendas this season to the One who is able to craft our reality into a story worth telling.
